As Canadians prepare to head to the polls, it’s essential to consider the key social challenges affecting individuals and families in our communities. At United Way, we are dedicated to strengthening communities by advocating for solutions that promote equity, opportunity, and well-being. While we do not take political positions, we encourage informed discussions on the issues that shape the lives of people across Northern Ontario.
1. Affordable Housing & Homelessness
The housing crisis isn’t just a big-city problem—Northern Ontario communities are also experiencing rising housing costs, limited rental availability, and increased homelessness. Many remote and rural areas lack emergency shelters and affordable housing options. Investments in housing solutions that reflect the unique needs of Northern communities are critical for long-term stability.
2. Healthcare & Mental Health Services
Access to healthcare in Northern Ontario remains a challenge due to long wait times, doctor shortages, and the need for better mental health and addiction services. Many rural and remote areas struggle with limited access to specialists and treatment programs. Expanding community-based healthcare, investing in telehealth, and addressing gaps in mental health services are key to ensuring no one is left behind.
3. Childcare & Family Supports
Many Northern Ontario families face a shortage of licensed childcare spaces, making it difficult for parents to work or attend school. Affordable, high-quality childcare that reflects the unique needs of Indigenous, rural, and working families is essential. Continued investment in childcare infrastructure and support for early learning will help ensure that families in the North have access to the resources they need.
4. Income Security & Poverty Reduction
Rural and Northern communities often experience higher costs of living, particularly when it comes to food, transportation, and utilities. Rising costs, coupled with fewer job opportunities in some regions, put financial strain on many households. Policies that support fair wages, stable employment, and food security initiatives are vital in reducing poverty across the North.
5. Indigenous Rights & Reconciliation
Northern Ontario is home to many Indigenous communities, many of whom still face challenges accessing clean drinking water, adequate housing, healthcare, and education. Continued progress on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action is essential, as is supporting Indigenous-led solutions that strengthen communities.
6. Gender Equity & Basic Needs
Access to basic hygiene products, including menstrual products, can be even more challenging in Northern and remote communities due to cost and availability. Initiatives like United Way’s Period Promise aim to reduce these barriers and ensure access to essential products. Gender equity also includes addressing pay gaps, supporting women in leadership roles, and providing safe spaces for those experiencing gender-based violence.
7. Immigration & Newcomer Support
Newcomers and refugees are increasingly settling in Northern Ontario, bringing new skills, cultures, and economic opportunities to the region. However, access to housing, employment, and community support remains a challenge. Ensuring strong settlement services and employment opportunities for newcomers will help Northern communities grow and thrive.
8. Climate Resilience & Community Well-being
Northern Ontario is on the frontlines of climate change, with wildfires, flooding, and extreme weather impacting communities. Many Indigenous and remote communities face unique challenges when responding to environmental changes. Investments in climate adaptation, emergency response, and sustainable infrastructure will help protect people, homes, and livelihoods.
Building Stronger Northern Communities Together
At United Way, we believe that informed conversations and community-driven solutions can help address these pressing issues. Regardless of political affiliation, we encourage all Canadians—especially those in Northern Ontario—to stay engaged, learn about the issues that impact their communities, and participate in the democratic process.
Together, we can create a future where everyone in Northern Ontario has the opportunity to succeed.
